Expo 2020 Dubai — Australian Pavilion

Expo 2020 Dubai was a six-month global World Expo held from October 2021 to March 2022 under the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” It was the first World Expo held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region, bringing together 192 participating countries and more than 24 million visits.

Commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), I was part of the photography team documenting Australia’s presence on this extraordinary international stage. The Australian Pavilion welcomed more than 1.6 million in-person visitors, including government officials, international delegations, business leaders, CEOs, celebrities and other VIP guests. The six-month programme included conferences, business and investment events, cultural performances, sporting activities, presentations and daily visitor experiences, alongside the Pavilion experience, Aussie Bar/Grill and hospitality spaces. The Pavilion hosted more than 140 business and investment events, with over 100 Australian speakers and 180 performers. My role involved capturing the full breadth of the Australian presence — from VIP and protocol visits to events, performances, hospitality, visitors and behind-the-scenes moments — while working closely with DFAT, the Australian Pavilion, media and international teams to create imagery for news coverage, social media, communications and ongoing international promotion.

LONG TERM PROJECT

Commissioned by Mercedes-Benz for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, this six-month nationwide project captured the spirit of South African football supporters. Travelling across South Africa with the official Bafana Bafana team bus, we photographed thousands of fans, whose portraits were combined into a large-scale collage that transformed the bus into a moving tribute to the nation. The completed bus travelled with the team throughout the World Cup, becoming a symbol of national pride and support.

LADIES LUNCHEON

Standard Bank, the official sponsor of the South African Cricket Team, hosted a memorable ladies’ luncheon in Johannesburg to celebrate and farewell the team ahead of the World Cup. Held at the prestigious Polo Club, the afternoon combined elegance, exceptional hospitality, and a beautifully curated dining experience. With a focus on celebrating the team and the supporters behind them, the event created a memorable atmosphere filled with connection, conversation, and national pride.

CONFERENCE

A week-long conference combining business, adventure, and unforgettable experiences. Guests travelled aboard the iconic Rovos Rail steam train to Legends Lodge for meetings, outdoor activities, gala events, safari dinners under the stars, and a round of golf at The Legend Golf & Safari Resort. The experience included the world-famous Extreme 19th hole, where golfers take a helicopter to the tee box on top of Hanglip Mountain before playing to a green 400 metres below.

ECONOMIC CONFERENCE

A high-level conference hosted by Standard Bank South Africa, bringing together business leaders and industry professionals to discuss Africa’s economic landscape, opportunities, and future growth. Held at the ICC in Sandton, the event featured keynote presentations, strategic discussions, and networking opportunities focused on the evolving role of Africa in the global economy.

WORLDCUP SENDOFF

A spectacular evening hosted by Standard Bank, the official sponsor of the South African Proteas Cricket Team, to celebrate and farewell the team ahead of the World Cup. Held on the top floor of one of Johannesburg’s tallest buildings, the event featured breathtaking city views, live entertainment by Prime Circle, culinary experiences from a legendary sushi chef, and an unforgettable guest experience.

WOMANS CONFERENCE

Sasol — Banyana Banyana National Team Celebration A celebration of Sasol’s partnership with the Banyana Banyana Women’s National Soccer Team, recognising the players, the journey, and the growth of women’s football in South Africa. The event brought together supporters, partners, and guests for an inspiring experience that celebrated the team’s achievements and ended with everyone attending a live match at Soccer City to cheer on the national team.
