The Idea Behind NORÐ EMPIRE XII

Every meaningful thing has a beginning — and a place on the map.
For us, it started right here.
NORÐ EMPIRE XII is not a name created to follow a trend. It is a name rooted in where we are, where we come from, and what we believe photography should become over time.
The first part, NORÐ, comes from the old Norse spelling of “North.” It is a quiet connection to Dannevirke’s Scandinavian heritage, but it also reflects our place on the map. Located on the North Island of New Zealand, North is part of our identity — a simple reminder of our location and the place where these stories begin.
We believe photography should work the same way. Not as something temporary that is created today and forgotten tomorrow, but as something that carries a story forward.
We live in a time where trends change faster than ever. With the rise of AI and an endless stream of instantly created images, it has become even more important to preserve what is real — the genuine expressions, the imperfect moments, and the human connection that cannot simply be generated.
Photography has always been about more than creating an image. It is about creating something that means something.
XII EMPIRE comes directly from our home — 12 Empire Street. A simple detail, but one that matters. This studio exists in a specific place, with a specific history, and we wanted the name to reflect that connection.
It is also a small nod to another kind of history — the timeless sound and legacy of "Empire Records". For me, music and photography have always been closely connected. My love for photography began while working for a professional photographic lab in London’s Soho and freelancing at live shows in the evenings.
It was a time when I truly lived and breathed photography. It was never about chasing the next opportunity or worrying about what it was worth financially. It was about being surrounded by creativity, music, people, and the excitement of capturing moments that only existed once.
That feeling has always stayed with me.
It is not a name designed to sound bigger than it is. It is a name designed to remember where it is.
At the heart of NORÐ EMPIRE XII is a simple belief:
Photography should create something meaningful.
Our goal is not to create images that belong only to this season. Our goal is to create photographs that become part of your story — displayed in your home, shared with your children, remembered by future generations, or representing your organization for years to come.
The moments we photograph are real. They are unforced, natural, and meaningful.
NORÐ EMPIRE XII was built on the idea that photography can be both personal and professional, intimate and reliable. A place where families can trust their memories are handled with care, and organizations can trust their moments are captured without unnecessary disruption.
We are not chasing what is popular today — because the truth is, trends move so quickly that sometimes they disappear before we even notice them.
Instead, we focus on creating work with purpose, quality, and meaning.
Building something that can still matter tomorrow.
